Admissions Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution for higher education (or equivalent)
  • Official transcripts from any institutions of higher education attended
  • Grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) for the last 60 hours of undergraduate work or post-baccalaureate study
  • The GRE exam has been waived as an admissions requirement
  • Three letters of recommendation, two of which should be from previous professors
  • Statement of purpose consistent with the goals of the program; explain why you are interested in attending FIU’s MALACS Program*
  • One academic writing sample that is no longer than 30 pages in length
  • Immunizations: All students must comply with FIU’s vaccination requirements including proof of immunization documents sent to the Health Care and Wellness Center
  • Additional admission requirements for international students 

*If applying for a teaching assistantship (TAship) or FLAS Fellowship, please reference TAship or FLAS application in personal statement.

Application Information for International Students

Applicants must contact the Office of Graduate Admissions and the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) for information regarding all immigration and FIU general requirements.

In addition to the general admission requirements listed above for domestic students, international students must also meet the criteria of one of the preferred exams below instead of the GRE, as well as demonstrate language proficiency.

  • Entrance Exams
    • Official GRE verbal and quantitative scores, sent directly by the Educational Testing Service. The University Graduate School’s current requirement is a minimum of 1000 combined verbal and quantitative score on the GRE or equivalent on the GMAT, EXADEP or LSAT.
  • Language Proficiency
    • International graduate student applicants whose native language is not English: TOEFL or IELTS scores, sent directly by the Educational Testing Service. The minimum requirement is a total score of 80 on the IBT TOEFL (equivalent to 550 on the paper-based version, or 213 on the computer-based version of TOEFL) or a total score of 6.3 on IELTS.

    • Declaration of Certification of Finances (DCF)

    • A sponsor letter, if applicable (for samples, contact ISSS at isss@fiu.edu or call 305-348-2421)
    • F-1 transfer, if you already have an F-1 Visa
    • A photocopy of your diploma in the native language sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions
    • Official transcripts in the native language sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions from the forwarding institution
    • Official translation of transcripts sent to Office of Graduate Admissions
    • Proof of medical insurance that complies with FIU standards for student health insurance if you waive access to FIU health insurance. For information, contact FIU Student Health Services
    • Official TOEFL or IELTS scores sent directly from Educational Testing Services to the Office of Graduate Admissions
