K-12

One of LACC's most important missions as a federally-supported Title VI National Resource Center is to promote public education regarding Latin America and the Caribbean through support for K-12 teacher education. In an effort to increase awareness about Latin America and the Caribbean and enhance teaching of the region, LACC dedicates significant time and resources towards K-12 education.

More specifically, LACC collaborates closely with area schools, develops comprehensive curricula on Latin America and the Caribbean, and works with educators to introduce and/or better integrate Latin American and Caribbean content into the classroom.

LACC provides online lesson plans on Latin America and the Caribbean, hosts Teacher Training Workshops, and sponsors various professional development events for area educators through collaboration with partners including the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College, Miami Book Fair, ReadCaribbean, History Miami, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

Teacher Training Workshops and Summer Institutes

LACC hosts more than 400 primary and secondary school teachers per academic year for full-day workshops on Latin American and Caribbean politics, history, society and culture. The content-based workshops are led by experts on the region and provide teachers with the opportunity to discuss strategies for teaching various topics related to Latin America and the Caribbean, with an emphasis on the richness and diversity of the region. More info

The Américas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature

The Américas Award recognizes U.S. works of fiction, poetry, folklore, or selected non-fiction (from picture books to works for young adults) published in the previous year in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States. By combining both and linking the Americas, the award reaches beyond geographic borders, as well as multicultural-international boundaries, focusing instead upon cultural heritages within the hemisphere.
