FLAS Fellowship

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship supports language training in Less-Commonly-Taught Languages (LCTLs), including Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and Quechua. The fellowship assists in the advancement of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for foreign language and area/international studies and supports the development of a qualified pool of international experts with global competence designed to meet U.S. national needs.

FLAS Fellows receive:

  • Academic Year Graduate: Up to $18,000 tuition and fees, $20,000 stipend
  • Academic Year Undergraduate: Up to $10,000 tuition and fees, $5,000 stipend
  • Summer Graduate/Undergraduate: $5,000 tuition and fees, $3,500 stipend
    • Students applying for Summer Fellowships must participate in a FLAS approved Summer Study Abroad program for training in Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Quechua, or Quichua and must have applied to the summer study abroad program by the FLAS Fellowship deadline.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Full-time, degree-seeking FIU graduate and undergraduate students in any discipline who are completing coursework related to Latin America may apply. FLAS Fellowship recipients are required to complete at least one Latin American and Caribbean-related area studies course and one Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or Quechua course each semester at FIU while holding the fellowship. Students must receive a letter grade and credit for each FLAS course.
  • Non-FIU students are eligible for Summer Fellowship.
  • Undergraduates must be prepared to study one of the approved languages at the intermediate or advanced level. Proof of proficiency will be required for undergraduate students applying for the FLAS Fellowship.
  • Graduate students may study one of the approved languages (Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or Quechua) at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels. However, graduate students applying to study a FLAS language at the beginning level must demonstrate that they speak another language from the region, other than English, at the advanced level and preference will be given to those students with intermediate or advanced level of proficiency in the language of study. For Summer Fellowships, graduate students at the beginning level will be considered for overseas language study only if an appropriate equivalent beginning language instruction program in the target language is not available in the United States.

Applicants must submit all supporting documents listed below electronically as PDFs to LACC Academic Program Coordinator, Carlos Tinoco, at ctinoco@fiu.edu. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.

  1. FLAS application
  2. 1 copy of unofficial transcripts
  3. 1 copy of test scores (ACT, SAT, GRE. GMAT, LSAT, etc.) if applicable
  4. Summer cycle only - Copy of completed FLAS approved study abroad program application
  5. Summer cycle, FIU students only - Copy of Third Party Program Approval (TPPA) form. Please note- if you are applying to a FLAS program located within the USA you are not required to apply for TPPA through the Office of Education Abroad. Only required for students applying for programs in international locations.
  6. 2-3 page double-spaced letter of intent that specifically outlines the relevance of Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Quechua, or Quichua language study and Latin American expertise to your academic, training and career goals.
