Humanities and Area Studies Faculty Research Development Program

Who: Are you a full-time regular faculty member or ABD PhD student engaged in humanities or humanistic social sciences research about a region or topic related to Latin America and the Caribbean, including Latinx topics and Anglophone regions? Are you interested in external support in the Humanities and humanistic Social Sciences to begin, advance or conclude research or writing, but still looking for appropriate support? Mystified or feel excluded from the parts of the university that approve external funding and discouraged by the changing funding landscape? And, above all, do you want to join the multiple alumni of this program who’ve submitted successful funding proposals to prestigious agencies including the Ford Foundation, Fulbright, ACLS, and the NEH?

What: This intensive summer workshop directed by Prof. Bianca Premo (History) can help you succeed in applying for fellowships and grants to support research or writing projects. The selected participants will attend a three-day intensive hybrid workshop (in person or Zoom offered) to explore Humanities funding and produce a draft project proposal. Along the way, you'll identify opportunities appropriate to your field; demystify the bureaucratic process of sponsored research in the Humanities; and cultivate strategies for making the quest for funding part of your already-demanding academic life.

When: Meetings will take place July 16, 20, and 24, 10am-1pm. Zoom and in-person options available.

Apply by May 15, 2026 at 5:00 pm sending the attached form to Apply_LACC@fiu.edu with the subject line: HAS Grant Workshop. Space limited. Participants will be selected based on promise of submitting applications for a High Value or similar  grant or fellowship within the designated period, project strength and fit within an area studies and humanities scope, and with attention to forming a diverse cohort in the workshop of different ranks, fields and perspectives. New applications prioritized; alumni of the HAS program can only submit for a new project.
