Professor Victor M. Uribe has taught Latin American history at FIU since the fall of 1993.
He offers a wide array of courses, ranging from the general history of colonial
(1490s-1820s) and modern (1820s-1990s) Latin America or the modern histories of Mexico and
Brazil, to more specialized seminars on the comparative history of Latin American legal
systems, families, and land tenure structures. He was awarded a TIP prize, a special honor
that recognizes FIU's best professors, in the 1993-1996 period.
Dr. Uribe holds a law degree, a master's in political science, and a Ph.D. in history. His
research and publications, one of which was recently awarded the Antonine Tibezar Prize,
pertain to the social history of Colombian lawyers and legal education. Currently he is
dedicated to the study of comparative history and is doing research for a book on the
history of family law in Colombia and Mexico.
