LACC Welcomes German Musicologist as Spring 2012 Visiting Scholar

LACC continues to serve as an important resource for scholars from across the globe and warmly welcomes its Spring 2012 Visiting Scholar to campus: Simone Munz is a musicologist from Georg August Universitat in Gottingen, Germany. Munz is conducting research on the role of music in Miami Cuban radio broadcasting to Cuba. Haitian Music Superstars Boukman Eksperyans Wowed Audience at FIU

LACC, in partnership with the FIU Haitian Student Organization, proudly hosted Boukman Eksperyans at FIU. Grammy-nominated Haitian music superstars Boukman Eksperyans treated the FIU community to a lecture/demo on Friday, November 16, 2012 and then thrilled the South Florida community with a free concert at Big Night in Little Haiti that attracted more than 2500 people.
LACC to Host K-12 Teachers for Workshop on Latin America and the Caribbean and the US Elections

As part of the Miami Consortium for Latin American and Caribbean Studies' US Department of Education Title VI Grant, LACC will host a Teacher Training Workshop in partnership with Miami Dade County Public Schools on December 5, 2012. The workshop will focus on race and politics and the impact of the US Presidential election on Latin America and the Caribbean. Registration is required.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2012 "Classically Cuban Concert: Music for Marti." Presented by FIU's Cuban Research Institute and co-sponsored by LACC, the program features compositions inspired by Jose Marti. The concert, under the direction of Armando Tranquilino spans over 100 years of works by Cuban and non-Cuban artists.

Sherry Johnson, associate professor in the FIU Department of History and director of LACC graduate programs, has been awarded the prestigious Gordon K. and Sybil Lewis Prize by the Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) for her latest work, Climate and Catastrophe in Cuba and the Atlantic World in the Age of Revolution. The Best Book Award was presented at the CSA’s 37th Annual Meeting, Le Gosier, Guadeloupe.

More Than 400 Students Participated in Green Treasures 2012!

More than 400 middle school students attended Green Treasures 2012. Part of The Fairchild Challenge, Green Treasures is a multidisciplinary competitive environmental education program that provides a forum for middle school students to learn more about ethnobotany of the region through interviews with Haitian Creole, Spanish and English-speaking seniors and discussions about the significance of plants in cultures throughout the hemisphere. Co-sponsored by LACC and Fairchild Botanic Garden.
