On December 11, 2011, the FIU Latin American and Caribbean Center's Cuban Research Institute hosted over 300 guests for its annual Classically Cuban concert. The 2011 concert, Cuban Music in the US, featured pieces written from 1840 through the 1990s by Cuban composers living in both Cuba and the US. Highlights included songs from Hollywood's silver screen which brought Cuban music to the masses and touched millions of people across the globe. The program, compiled by author and independent scholar, Emilio Cueto, was arranged by FIU professor, Armando Tranquilino and performed by musicians from the FIU School of Music and the UM Frost School of Music. Co-sponsored by LACC and the Cuban Research Institute at FIU with partial support from the US Department of Education Title VI Grant.
