The Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University announces a competition for field research travel grants to support students in the Masters degree in Latin American and Caribbean Studies wishing to conduct research in Mexico & Brazil. LACC will award up to four research travel grants for on-site field research. Awards range up to $2,500 and will be made on a competitive basis, following the guidelines and criteria described below. Cost sharing or matching funds are not required. Proposals that demonstrate a readiness for field research, including language proficiency will receive priority.
All MALACS students are eligible to apply; however, the proposed project must: 1) be an integral part of research for an exit paper; 2) require research in Mexico and / or Brazil; and 3) be conducted between March 10 and October 31, 2010. The Mexico - Brazil grant funds can be used for all international and in-country travel related expenses including airfare, accommodations, a set amount for per diems, ground transport (including car rental, tolls and gas), vaccines, visas, and other travel related fees. Equipment, supplies and other non-travel related expenses are not eligible. Only applications received by the deadline will be eligible.

Proposals will be evaluated and scored by a three member Evaluation Committee. Consideration in applicant scoring will be given according to the following criteria:
- Feasibility of the proposed project and the preparedness of the applicant for field research
- Degree of significance of Mexico and / or Brazil to applicant’s research
- Overall GPA
- Letters of recommendation
All Evaluation Committee decisions will be final and not subject to appeal.
Awardees also will be required to sign a letter of agreement outlining all of the awardees’ obligations and the university’s regulations regarding travel abroad. Upon their return to the U.S., awardees will be required to submit receipts for reimbursable expenses and a final report detailing their research activities and outcomes. Any collateral materials, documentaries or other published materials that result from the research project will recognize the financial support of the Latin American & Caribbean Center of the Florida International University.
LACC can assist awardees in securing the appropriate travel documents and making travel arrangements. Travel MUST be coordinated with LACC staff.
