Call for papers for the16th Annual Haitian Studies Association Conference, “Re-discovering Haitian History: Archiving Memory to Construct our Future” Despite its tumultuous history, Haiti has remained in the eyes of the world as both a symbol of freedom and a people’s unremitting struggle for self-determination. Held during the bicentennial year of Haiti’s independence, the Haitian Studies Association’s 16th Annual Conference will focus on a national heritage that has captured the creative spirit and the human imagination of Haitians and peoples all over the world. The conference will aim to rediscover its past, reflect on the ways in which it has shaped the lives of millions of people, and consider how past accomplishments can foster new visions for the future. The conference is co-sponsored by HSA, University of Massachusetts-Boston, University of Puerto Rico and KOSANBA and will be held October 6-8, 2004 at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Call for papers for 3rd International Congress of the Bolivian Studies Association, which will be held February 24-26, 2005 at Florida International University. BSA welcomes interdisciplinary sessions and discussions on any period and topic, from the study of Indigenous texts to contemporary issues in Bolivia. Topics may include, but are not limited to: democracy and democratization; globalization; postnationalism; neoregionalism; Indigenous movements; Colonial studies; politics of race, gender and ethnicity; cultural politics in educational reforms; literary and cultural studies; cultural theory; popular culture; media studies; urban and environmental studies; linguistics; architecture; photography; natural history; biomedical sciences; and others. Thursday, July 29. 9:00am-10:30am, Washington D.C. “Police-Military Relations in Latin America: The Challenge of Cooperation in a New Security Era.” Mini-conference will assess the state of police-military relations in the context of new threats, identify patterns of relations between security institutions, and address the challenges associated with civil unrest, the proliferation of drugs and gangs, and new border issues.
