Colombian Studies Institute The Colombian Studies Institute (CSI) at Florida International University is one of the only academic centers in the US dedicated exclusively to the study of Colombia and Colombia-related issues. Created in fall of 2000 to address the ongoing conflict in Colombia and it implications for South Florida, the CSI has expanded its mission since then to include a broader scope of issues and goals. The CSI works to develop high quality research on Colombia’s economy, society, politics, cultural and environment. It aspires to become the leading academic institution in the US for research information on Colombian affairs; and to contribute to inform the public policies of the US and other countries on Colombia. Accordingly, the CSI coordinates policy research, outreach and education programs. The institute participates in US drug policy discourse, monitors the implementation of Plan Colombia and the Colombian peace process, and conducts research on the consequences of US and Colombian policy and activities. Housed in FIU’s Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), the CSI draws on the experience of faculty associates and the many resources of Miami’s growing Colombian community, including the hundreds of Colombian students enrolled at the University and their dynamic student organization, COLSA. In addition, CSI also draws on the expertise of LACC’s consortium partner, the University of Florida’s Center for Latin American Studies, as well as the US Southern Command, the Organization of American States’ Inter-American Commission on Drug Abuse (CICAD) and the Consulate of Colombia in Miami. Also important are LACC’s cooperative agreements with several leading Colombian universities, among them the Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Javeriana and Universidad Nacional. |
