Cuban Living History For those interested in the contributions and struggles of Cuban exiles in the United States, the Cuban Living History Collection at Florida International University offers invaluable insights into the dynamics of Cuban Miami. In April 2000, University Park’s Green Library inaugurated this special collection dedicated to Miguel González-Pando, founder and director of the Cuban Living History Project who worked at FIU from 1973 until his death in 1998. Currently housed in the Special Collections department of the library, the collection consists of dozens of interviews with Cuban exiles who played an integral role in the construction of Cuban Miami. Conducted by Dr. González-Pando, the interviews formed the basis for three documentaries: Y los quiero conocer, the Emmy Award-winning Calle Ocho: Cuban Exiles Look at Themselves, and Ni patria ni amo, which focuses on exile opposition to Fidel Castro’s rule. In the words of Uva de Aragón, associate director of the Cuban Research Institute, González-Pando “wanted to leave something his children could be proud of. But he accomplished much more than that. He has left generations of Cubans an important chronicle of exile and of the Republic, and an example of how to face adversity, how to convert problems into positive energy." Those who wish to access the Cuban Living History collection must visit the Green Library’s Special Collection department located on the fourth floor of the library.
