Faculty Research

No other university outside of Cuba surpasses FIU in the number of Cuba specialists on its faculty. More than 40 Cubanists teach in areas ranging from the Cuban-American exile experience to the impact of Cuba on the world. The following are a few examples of current research being conducted by FIU faculty members with an interest in Cuban and Cuban-American studies:

Damián Fernández, director of the Cuban Research Institute and professor of international relations, and Patricia Price, professor of geography, are the primary investigators of “Comparative Latinization: Civic and Place Engagement in Three Latino Enclave Neighborhoods in Transition,” a two-year project that began in January 2005. Funded by a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, the study analyzes civic engagement and use of public spaces in Latin neighborhoods in three American cities: Miami, Chicago, and Phoenix. The Cuban Research Institute at FIU is the lead institution in this three-city study that includes Arizona State University and the University of Notre Dame as research partners. FIU’s component of the project examines the transition that is occurring in East Little Havana as Cubans are replaced by Central American immigrants, and as affluent Cuban Americans begin a process of gentrification. The study employs survey research, interviews, focus groups, and a Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis.

Nicolás Quintana, professor of architecture, is leading a research and planning project to provide a vision for Havana that will serve as guide for the future of the city and its urban, rural, and natural landscapes. The project, Havana and its Landscapes, was developed by Quintana and FIU School of Architecture Dean Juan Antonio Bueno, landscape architect and engineer, with professor emeritus Felipe Préstamo, architect and planner, as research consultant. It is being funded by a $325,000 grant from Sergio Pino, Chairman of Century Partners Group, and Anthony Seijas, regional president of Lennar Developers, Inc.
